UK Box Office Blog: Weekend of August 15–17, 2025

Top of the Charts: ‘Weapons’ Holds #1

Despite a sharp -45% drop, Warner Bros Int’l’s Weapons retained the top spot with a weekend gross of £1,557,829, bringing its total to £6,254,096 after two weeks. Notably, the fall-off excluding previews was a gentler -40%, suggesting solid weekday interest. It now ranks as the 21st top-grossing film of 2025, just behind Mickey 17.


New Entries Make Noise

2. Materialists – Sony Int’l

  • Debuted with £1,287,221 across 678 screens, including £456,146 from 591 previews

  • Marks the 31st best opening of the year, just behind Ballerina

  • Also lands as the 79th widest release ever in UK history

  • With strong preview support and wide reach, this stylish satire could hold well in week two


3. Coolie

  • Opened with £939,508 on 203 screens, a robust per-screen average

  • Ranks as the 45th top opening of 2025, just behind I Know What You Did Last Summer

  • A niche hit with potential for expansion if word-of-mouth builds


8–10. Mid-table newcomers

  • Together – £504,490 from 529 screens

  • War 2 – £503,416 from 286 screens

    All three launched without previews, suggesting modest but stable interest. War 2’s compact screen count hints at strong regional targeting.


Holdover Highlights

  • Freakier Friday dropped -47% to £915,704, totalling £4,027,369 after two weeks

  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps slid -50% to £688,026, but its cumulative £20,807,289 keeps it among the year’s top earners

  • The Bad Guys 2 held better with a -33% dip, adding £542,738 to reach £8,821,350

  • Superman added £323,066 (-50%) to climb to £26,857,120, officially surpassing Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to become the 5th highest-grossing film of 2025


Re-Releases and Niche Gems

  • Princess Mononoke (Re: 2025) – £184,021 from just 52 screens

  • F1 and Smurfs continue their slow fade, both down nearly 50%

  • Jurassic World Rebirth still roars with £34,295,552 total, despite a -50% weekend dip


Looking Ahead: New Releases Forecast

This coming weekend sees a flood of international and indie titles. Among the new releases this coming weekend, Eddington (Universal) brings prestige drama and awards potential, likely to attract discerning audiences. Anime fans will be pleased with Wolf Children (4K Re-Release) a niche but beloved title that should perform well in targeted screenings.


The Life Of Chuck (StudioCanal), based on a Stephen King story, could emerge as a sleeper hit if reviews and word-of-mouth align. Meanwhile, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (50th Anniversary) (Walt Disney) is set to energize cult audiences with event-style screenings. Finally, Dongji Rescue (Cine Asia) offers action-packed thrills and genre appeal, likely to perform solidly in urban centres.
