The UK box office held steady this weekend, with overall grosses for the top 15 titles showing a 0% change from last weekend. A major horror sequel led the frame with a strong debut, while several holdovers crossed notable milestones and a handful of re-releases added variety to the chart.

Weekend roundup

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

£3,376,384 opening; Week 1. A commanding debut that ranks as the 539th best opening weekend ever, landing just behind The Matrix. It also becomes the biggest opening of the year so far, narrowly overtaking last weekend’s Hamnet. While this is a strong start, it opens notably below last year’s 28 Years Later, which debuted with £4,780,374 before finishing at £15,576,178. The drop in opening scale will make its second‑weekend hold especially important in determining whether it can match or exceed its predecessor’s final tally

The Housemaid

£2,827,934; Week 4; down 20%. A solid hold for the thriller, bringing its total to £22,630,490.

Hamnet £2,608,944; Week 2; down 20%. A strong second weekend keeps momentum high, with the total now at £8,396,010.

Avatar: Fire And Ash £1,702,004; Week 5; down 35%. Its total has climbed to £38,439,770, making it the 103rd highest-grossing film ever in the UK. It now sits just behind Fast & Furious 7 and has overtaken both Lilo & Stitch and Jurassic World Rebirth on the yearly chart. It is currently the 4th top-grossing film of 2025.

Marty Supreme

£1,478,246; Week 4; down 28%. Total now £11,911,144, continuing a steady run.

Zootropolis 2 £981,351; Week 8; down 20%. Cracking £30,490,447 this weekend, it has now crossed the £30 million mark and stands as the 167th highest-grossing film ever, just behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Rental Family £521,717 opening; Week 1. A modest but notable new entry.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (R) £473,377 opening; Week 1. A strong anniversary re-release showing the franchise’s enduring appeal.

The Spongebob Movie: Search for Squarepants £467,289; Week 4; down 24%. Total now £7,440,534.

Anaconda £300,917; Week 4; down 43%. Total now £5,226,009.

Mana Shankara Varaprasad Garu £256,874 opening; Week 1. A niche but healthy debut.

Song Sung Blue £229,814; Week 3; down 47%. Total now £2,474,425.

Parasakthi £168,762 opening; Week 1. Another focused regional release landing mid-table.

Giant

£159,159; Week 2; down 57%. Total now £703,150.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (R) £153,267 opening; Week 1. A second Tolkien reissue rounding out the top 15.

Holdovers and milestones

• Avatar: Fire And Ash continues to be the standout performer among holdovers, climbing into the all-time top 103 and maintaining its position as one of the year’s biggest earners.

• Zootropolis 2’s £30 million milestone cements its status as one of the most durable family titles of the year, still charting strongly in its eighth weekend.

• The Housemaid and Hamnet both posted controlled 20% drops, signalling strong word of mouth and sustained audience interest.

• Marty Supreme continues its steady run past £11.9 million, holding better than many mid-range titles at this stage.

Quick Take:

A flat weekend overall, but one defined by a strong new opener and several significant milestones. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple delivered the year’s biggest debut so far, while Avatar: Fire And Ash and Zootropolis 2 continued to climb the all-time charts. Re-releases of The Lord of the Rings titles added depth to the slate, and mid-range holdovers showed respectable stability.

Ones to watch next week:

A busy slate of new releases is set to shake up the chart, with several titles poised for strong debuts.

• Baby Girl

• Heavyweight

• Mercy

• No Other Choice

• Return to Silent Hill

• Saipan

• The History of Sound

• La Scala: Cosi Fan Tutte

Final Take:

A steady weekend kept the market level, but the combination of a major horror debut, strong family holdovers, and high-performing reissues ensured the chart remained lively. With a packed lineup of new releases arriving next week, the UK box office is primed for a significant shift in momentum.

Man in a dark coat stands with arms outstretched in front of a skull-covered wall lit by lanterns. Mysterious, ominous atmosphere.
